Colt is a U.S. firearms manufacturer founded in 1847 by Samuel Colt. Colt's early history was mainly focussed on the production of revolvers for which Samuel Colt held a patent. The Colt Model 1911 semiautomatic pistol was the standard U.S. military sidearm from 1911 to 1985 and is still frequently used by military agencies, law enforcement, and civilians. Colt also held the production rights to the M16 assault rifle during the Vietnam War and still produces M16 and AR-15 variants for police and military.
